UAE – The Place that Taught me to Bounce Back
The UAE has been my home for many years, and it is where my leadership was quietly trained to “hold steady.” I remember the school closures during the Kuwait War, the recalibration after the financial crisis, the careful clarity of COVID19 days, and the neighbor-to-neighbor care during the floods and more recently the normalcy in the everyday services while the country’s defense delivered safety for its residents. Across these chapters—and through recent regional strains—the pattern I witnessed was consistent: decisive leadership, calm execution, and care for people. That cadence taught me that strength doesn’t have to be loud, and empathy doesn’t have to be soft but both have to be real.
Resilience as Continuity
Resilience isn’t the absence of fear; it’s the decision to continue with purpose when the path is blurred. In the toughest periods of my career, my team, customers and partners looked to me for answers I didn’t yet have. What I could offer—without delay—was presence. I learned that people don’t expect leaders to be perfect; they expect us to be honest with them, to stay visible, and to keep rhythm when anxiety tempts drift. Regular follow throughs help: the one-on-ones still happened, updates still shipped, decisions still advanced. Calm, I discovered, is a strategy.
Compassion as Practice
If resilience keeps us moving, compassion keeps us human. I carry a small collection of moments that changed me more than any course ever could: the ten second check-in when someone asked, “Are you okay?”; the manager who quietly absorbed a deadline so a teammate could tend to family; the colleague who named what everyone felt but no one could say. These “micro-behaviors” turn empathy into action – the last few days we have all witnessed the care and concerns of friends, family, colleagues who have become closer by checking in with each other.
Gratitude that Grounds
With time, I’ve come to see gratitude not as sentiment, but as a stabilizer. It shifts leadership from pressure to perspective. Gratitude is intentional- you build yourself to see and appreciate the team, colleagues and more. The global CFO of our organization signs off her emails with a closing “With Gratitude” – it speaks of a posture of appreciation versus entitlement. Gratitude softens ego, sharpens awareness, and keeps ambition tethered to purpose.
The Wisdom of Many
Some of my best decisions were enhanced—by people who saw the world differently from me. Diversity is more than representation; it is intelligence. I now ask, “Whose view is missing?” Different reactions to crisis don’t slow us down; they widen the runway for better choices.
Technology for Presence; Humanity for Belonging
Digital tools kept us and teams connected when distance and disruption threatened to scatter us. But technology only connects the mind; belonging requires intention. A weekly note to the field, a living FAQ when plans change, a short Friday pulse—small rituals that say: I’m here, I’m listening, we will navigate this together.
Give to Gain, in Practice
“No one rises alone” is more than a line for me; it’s an operating system. Mentorship—both giving and receiving—has opened doors competence alone could not. IWD’s call to Give to Gain resonates because generosity doesn’t dilute leadership; it multiplies it. Offer time and visibility, create opportunities, and you don’t lose influence—you grow it in others.
A Quiet Promise
If these past few days have taught me anything, it’s that our humanity is not a distraction from leadership—it’s the foundation of it. May we continue to lead with courage, decide with clarity, act with kindness, rise with resilience, and always stay grounded in gratitude.
