OpenAI is undergoing a significant leadership reshuffle alongside a major acquisition to fuel its product ambitions. The company has announced the $1.1 billion purchase of product analytics firm Statsig, with its founder and CEO, Vijaye Raji, set to join OpenAI as the newly appointed CTO of Applications. Reporting directly to Simo, Raji will oversee product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex while also managing infrastructure and integrity across OpenAI’s growing portfolio.

OpenAI’s leadership changes come shortly after Fidji Simo, former Instacart chief, took charge as CEO of Applications on August 18. Tasked with scaling the company’s consumer and enterprise-facing products, Simo is already shaping the division with bold moves. In a blog post, OpenAI confirmed the $1.1 billion acquisition of product analytics firm Statsig, noting that while the firm’s employees will transition to OpenAI, Statsig will continue operating independently out of Seattle to maintain customer continuity.

Statsig, known for its A/B testing and experimentation tools, strengthens OpenAI’s ability to refine and optimize products like ChatGPT as they expand to broader markets. The reshuffle also created new executive roles, including CTO of B2B Applications, a post filled by Srinivas Narayanan. Previously leading engineering at OpenAI, Narayanan has been instrumental in building ChatGPT and APIs, and will now oversee business-facing solutions for startups, enterprises, and governments, reporting directly to COO Brad Lightcap.

At the same time, Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil is moving back toward research, taking on the role of VP of AI for Science. In this capacity, Weil will partner with Chief Research Officer Mark Chen to build a new science-focused research team. With Weil’s shift, leadership of ChatGPT and related product teams under Nick Turley will now report directly to Simo, further consolidating her influence over the applications division.

Together, these moves highlight OpenAI’s strategy to establish applications as a dedicated growth engine, separate from its research efforts. The Statsig acquisition underscores a push to add deep product analytics expertise while bringing proven leaders on board to scale consumer and enterprise platforms. With Simo driving vision, Vijaye Raji set to lead engineering as CTO of Applications, and Narayanan focusing on enterprise adoption, OpenAI is clearly preparing to transform from a model-first AI lab into a full-scale applications powerhouse.
