How I’m turning kids’ habits into new mindful learning moments

When I think back to the bedtime stories my grandfather used to make up just for me, I don’t see them only as sweet childhood memories. I see the beginning of a completely new approach to children’s media. Years later, I rewrote one of his stories, weaving in breathing practices and elements of meditation. That’s how the idea for StarKid Universe was born — a startup dedicated to turning children’s usual passive consumption of stories online into an interactive and educational experience.

Unlike many modern cartoons with their frantic pacing and loud characters, at StarKid we build our content on mindfulness, neuroscience, and the gentle power of puppet theater. Together with a small team of writers, designers, and animators — from literature graduates to stop-motion specialists — we create short episodes for children aged 3 to 9 and we are also preparing stories for kids between 9 and 12.  Each one includes breathing exercises, music, rhyme, and gentle humor, helping kids develop emotional resilience and self-awareness.

The project started with seven characters but eventually evolved into four puppet figures, each representing a core emotional skill. I want children to grow up alongside these characters-as-guides, learning simple tools they can use in daily life.

It worries me that we’re raising a generation capable of navigating artificial intelligence, but not their own emotions. That realization became the true driving force behind StarKid’s mission.

Our approach is grounded not just in inspiration, but in science. The foundations of the project are well-researched frameworks:

  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) — a program shown to reduce anxiety and depression in children.
  • Inner Kids by Susan Kaiser Greenland — a pioneering model for early-childhood mindfulness.
  • Mindful Parenting — a scientifically validated program developed by the University of Amsterdam.

Our first pilot took place at Compleat KiDZ, a pediatric clinic in North Carolina. There, we integrated mindfulness exercises into therapy for children with autism and anxiety. The stories have been tested in schools and organizations working with immigrant children as well as children from lower-income families, where altogether more than 900 children participated. The feedback from therapists and teachers was always overwhelmingly positive.

What makes StarKid special is not only what we teach children, but also what we deliberately avoid: no villains, no glorification of bad behavior, no overstimulation. Instead, our stories help guide kids out of a victim mentality and into their full power, gently showing them that they can choose how to feel and how to face challenges.

Recently, creative director Diogo Gameiro joined our team as CCO. He brought with him high-level production experience and a passion for using AI as a creative accelerator — never as a replacement. As he puts it, “Pairing creative minds with smart tools gives small studios a real chance to compete with big production houses.”

Now, we are expanding our story library and building a digital ecosystem for parents, therapists, and kids. Our goal is simple yet ambitious: to transform passive screen time into meaningful peace time for families around the world.

Ahead lies a new chapter — preparing for our 2025 pre-seed fundraising round, which will help us expand into English-speaking countries in the global market. With content adaptable for television and streaming platforms, we aim to equip millions of children with lifelong emotional management skills.
