
In his new role, Bawankule will focus on moving Indian corporations past the experimental pilot phase toward full-scale AI integration. He aims to embed advanced AI into core business workflows while ensuring responsible and impactful adoption across sectors.
Bawankule brings over two decades of extensive experience across the technology, media, and telecom sectors, having held senior leadership positions at some of the world’s most influential organizations. Most recently, he served at Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he led multiple verticals—including telecom, retail, and logistics—to drive cloud and AI adoption across India and South Asia. Prior to that, he was at The Walt Disney Company, spearheading ad sales for linear TV and Disney+ Hotstar while managing high-profile properties such as the IPL.
His career also includes a significant tenure at Google India, where he held senior roles across Google Cloud and various industry segments, focusing on accelerating the nation’s digital and e-commerce ecosystems. Earlier in his career, Bawankule built a strong foundation in hardware and telecommunications through leadership roles at Dell and Motorola, where he managed Asia-Pacific sales portfolios and strategic telecom partnerships.
The move comes as OpenAI looks to monetize its technology through enterprise-grade solutions like ChatGPT Enterprise. By hiring a veteran with deep ties to India’s traditional enterprises and digital-native startups, OpenAI is positioning itself to compete directly with established cloud providers like Google and AWS in the burgeoning Indian AI market.
