Today marks a historic milestone as India commemorates #10YearsOfDigitalIndia, a visionary initiative that began a decade ago with the aim of transforming the nation into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Launched in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Digital India mission set out to make technology accessible, affordable, and inclusive reaching every corner of the country.

Ten years later, India stands as a global digital leader. The impact of Digital India has touched nearly every citizen, powering a remarkable shift in how people access services, conduct business, and engage with governance. From digital payments and education to healthcare and connectivity, the scale of transformation is unparalleled.

A Journey of Empowerment and Inclusion

When Digital India was launched, the goal was clear: bridge the digital divide and unlock opportunities through technology. Today, the results speak for themselves. India now leads the world in real-time digital payments, has executed one of the fastest 5G rollouts globally, and is laying the groundwork for next-gen technologies such as artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

Remote villages are now connected. Local startups are scaling with ease. Citizens across socioeconomic strata are transacting online, accessing healthcare digitally, and using government services without visiting an office. Digital India has become a catalyst for inclusive growth and grassroots innovation.

Digital India by the Numbers

  • 5G Reach: India’s 5G rollout now covers 95% of the population, surpassing regions like Europe, Latin America, and Africa. The rapid deployment underscores the country’s commitment to high-speed connectivity for all.
  • Affordable Internet: At less than ₹10 per GB, India offers the most affordable mobile internet in the world. This has fueled digital inclusion and enabled millions to access information and services online.
  • Global Digital Payments Leader: India now powers nearly half of the world’s real-time digital payments, with billions of transactions processed monthly through platforms like UPI. This has made India the epicenter of digital financial innovation.
  • Digital Health Ecosystem: Over 78 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) have been created, positioning India among the largest digital health ecosystems globally. This ensures secure, inclusive access to healthcare services for all citizens.
  • Optical Fibre Expansion: With over 42 lakh route kilometers of optical fibre laid—11 times the distance from Earth to the Moon—India’s digital backbone now reaches even its most remote regions, enabling initiatives like BharatNet, e-Governance, and 5G connectivity.
  • ONDC Upliftment: The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has already onboarded over 7 lakh sellers in just two years. By including small retailers, artisans, and MSMEs, the network is redefining digital commerce in India and empowering grassroots entrepreneurs.

A Future-Ready Digital Nation

As India celebrates this decade of digital empowerment, the focus now shifts to the future—where AI, data sovereignty, digital skilling, and semiconductor innovation will drive the next wave of growth. The success of Digital India reflects the collective resolve of 140 crore Indians, who have embraced technology as a tool for progress.

What began as an initiative is now a movement—one that continues to evolve, inspire, and build a stronger, smarter, and more inclusive India.
